About New Providence Hardware

In the Beginning

Problems needing solutions are as old as time. When people began settling the fertile soils of Hardin county Iowa, there needed to be a source for all the necessities of a developing community. Hardware stores to rural communities are like milk and eggs are to a baker. Farm implements, cream separator, paint and oils, and even windmill and pump work could be acquired at the local business.

It was said of New Providence that it has “always been a good country town trading point, the business being carried on by the best of honest men and the people have been well served.” By supplying what the patrons need, New Providence Hardware has earned the distinction of being the oldest hardware store in Iowa.

Tom and Marlene McDonald have been the proprietors of the historical store for over 35 years. We believe the core values of honest old fashioned integrity and meeting the needs of our customers is just as important in the modern world as it was in the 1800s. We offer personalized service, broad selection of products and first hand experience. We want to be your problem solvers.
